Nerve conduction studies are performed by producing an electrical stimulus over the nerve in question. A reference electrode elsewhere on the body measures the nerve’s response to the stimulation. There are specific norms for each nerve’s response to the stimulation according to where it occurs. If a nerve’s response deviates from what is normal, then the doctor knows that nerve entrapment is present on the abnormal nerve.
